Monologues
Watch all of the monologues in this order. use the monologues label to access them
Jericho
10 Things I Hate About You
Ratatouille
The Devil Wears Prada
after watching each one two or three times, discuss...
- what it is about
- what makes it good (some will of course like one more than another)
each student to choose one they like best
organize to write a paragraph about what makes it so good.
- language?
- ideas?
- story?
- setting?
- tone?
plan and then write a paragraph
prepare to present the monologue yourself
no homework

I Hate
10 Things I Hate About You
I Hate.... poem
And the way you cut your hair
I hate the way you drive my car
I hate it when you stare
I hate your big dumb combat boots
And the way you read my mind
I hate you so much that it makes me sick
It even makes me rhyme
I hate the way you're always right
I hate it when you lie
I hate it when you make me laugh
Even worse when you make me cry
I hate the way you're not around
And the fact that you didn't call
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all
The Devil Wears Prada

'This... stuff'? Oh, ok. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back.
But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin.
However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs, and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.

Is it better to be feared or respected?
I say, “Is it too much to ask for both?”
With that in mind,
I humbly present the crown jewel of Stark Industries' Freedom Line.
It's the first missile system to incorporate our proprietary repulsor technology.
They say the best weapon is one you never have to fire.
I respectfully disagree.
I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once.
That's how Dad did it.
That's how America does it.
And it's worked out pretty well so far.
Find an excuse to let one of these off the chain, and I personally guarantee you the bad guys won't even want to come out of their caves.
For your consideration, the Jericho.
